Class Information: Heavy weight Pacific locomotives designed for Top Link passenger services on the Southern Railway were conceived during hostilities of World War 2. The Merchant Navy class were nicknamed “Spam Cans” due to their unorthodox appearance. A total of 30 locomotives were constructed, all named after steam ship lines operating out of Southampton Docks. Both the rebuilt Merchant Navy Class and Coronation Class locomotives are a new generation of models for the new millennium. Produced to the exacting Super Detail standard, both models include in their specification blackened finish handrails and wheels plus etched brass valve gear and detailed cab interior. They also feature a five pole motor housed in their respective locomotive bodies for precise slow speed running.

Year Information: Arguably the most famous of the Merchant Navy Class, 'Clan Line' was the last of its type to be rebuilt in October 1959. At that time the locomotive had achieved over 400,000 miles by withdrawal the mileage had increased to nearly 800,000. 'Clan Line' is now maintained and operated by the Merchant Navy Locomotive Preservation Society Limited and can be seen hauling a distinguished rake of Pullman coaches. As with many other Hornby Merchant Navy models 'Clan Line' is powered by a 5 pole motor housed in the locomotive.
