| 1995 | Not all trains were pulled by giant steam engines as quite often these big locomotives were too heavy for many of the smaller branch lines. For these tracks light weight engines were built to haul trains to the more remote parts of the British Isles. These small locomotives were also to be found toiling away in the shunting yards, many of them working around the clock. |
| 1996 | After nationalisation in 1948, British Railways inherited many of the locomotives that had previously been owned by one of the Big Four companies (LMS, GWR, SR and LNER). The Class J83 locomotive in this set, was ex LNER and many such locos were used in marshalling yards or, as in this case, for local goods haulage. The assorted rolling stock in their bright colours makes an attractive spectacle as they are pulled around the oval of track, with the siding making an ideal stopping place for the locomotive and the crew to rest up. |
